What are the pros and cons of going to a tankless water heater? How can the cost difference be justified?

Tankless water heaters only provide hot water as it is needed, and can save homeowners considerable money by not producing the standby energy loss associated with regular water heaters, which keep a reservoir of heated water at all times.

Approximately 15 percent of a home’s energy use is attributed to heating water.  By using a tankless water heater, and eliminating standby energy loss, homeowners can reduce their energy consumption by 10 to 15 percent.

A tankless water heater should be considered an investment for your home, and will reduce homeowners’ energy consumption, saving money throughout the system’s lifespan.  Tankless water heaters last for about 20 years.  This is 5 to 10 years longer than the lifespan of a standard water heater.

Even though the cost of a tankless water heater may seem higher than the traditional 40 gallon style water heaters, chances are you will save money in the long run and will have the peace of mind of knowing that you will never run out of hot water.

There are several manufacturers and I recommend doing your homework to see what style meets your needs. In the end, it comes down to personal choice.
