How does a thermostat timer work?

    Joyce, Raleigh, NC

By thermostat timer, I believe you are talking about a thermostat that has an input for an external clock/timer that can trigger the system to be turned off and on at pre-set times. This is not a setup that I recommend as it turns the air conditioning unit entirely off which can allow the temperature in the space to vary greatly. I do encourage you to consider installing a digital programmable thermostat that allows you to program temperatures to raise and lower at selected times. For example, in the summer, you may want to let the temperature rise during the day by a few degrees if everyone is out of the house all day. You save money by not cooling the house as much in the hottest part of the day. Then the temperature is lowered to the desired temperature automatically by the time your family normally comes home. We don’t recommend varying the temperatures by more than six degrees, however, as this may cause your system to run too much trying to recover the temperature you want. I suggest you contact a professional HVAC contractor, such as the ARS/Rescue Rooter branch in Raleigh, NC at (919) 865-7777, to assess your cooling needs and to help you select and install your new digital programmable thermostat.
