Unit and fan running but not compressor

The inside unit of my air conditioner is running and the outside fan is working but the compressor is not running. Inside the house we don't have cold air. What is problem and how can I check before I call for service?

There actually isn’t much a homeowner can do in this case. There are a couple of things you do know about the system at this point. One is that there is power to the outside unit since the outdoor fan is working. You also know that the thermostat is working to turn it on, since it starts the fan. These are about the limit of homeowner checks that can be made. A qualified service technician would need to open the outside unit and diagnose why the compressor is failing to start, as there are numerous causes for this failure.
