• Unit blowing warm air; capacitor or fuses?

    Aug.23.2011

My rooftop unit was blowing warm air. The tech came to check it out and told me the compressor or the whole unit needed to be replaced. I had a second tech come and he told me it was the capacitor. He replaced it for $150 (better than $900 to $2000) and the AC was working fine after that. But two weeks later it stopped working again and he refused to come and inspect the unit unless I pay for another inspection fee and/or agree for a different repair if needed. What happened? Did this guy just perform a temporary fix to make a quick buck? Can anyone tell me what can be wrong with the air conditioning after changing the capacitor? Someone told me it could be the fuses. Is this accurate? Please help; it’s 100 degrees and I have kids. I can’t afford to spend any more money.

First of all, if the capacitor did correct the problem for two weeks, then that most likely was a problem with the unit. I am confident that it was a fix that the technician felt was correct, but it’s possible that he didn’t take the next step to verify, after the replacement of the capacitor, the correct operating factors. It all may be part of a bigger problem. I suggest you contact the ARS Corona location in Corona, CA at (800) 442-5543 for a free second opinion. You don’t state if the two technicians were from the same company or not, but it is always a good idea to obtain a second opinion. There is no way anyone can tell you “it’s this or it’s that” without actually checking the unit out completely because there are so many different items or functions in a system that can appear to be the same problem.
