• Upstairs, downstairs heating/cooling issues

    Dec.21.2009

My heating and air conditioning system blows really low heat upstairs and stays cold during winter. In the summer it stays cool downstairs and hot upstairs. What can I do to fix this problem without spending a lot of money?

The temperature in your home generally only matches the thermostat setting right where your thermostat is located. Heat rises while cool air settles into certain areas. Many home duct systems are inefficient. Plus, expanses of glass and/or two-story or vaulted areas will only make good heat distribution more challenging. A lot depends on whether you have a one system or two system home. If you have a one system home, you may want to look into an upstairs return vent if you don’t already have one. This will pull the hot air from the upstairs in the summer and condition the air, and it will work the other way around in the winter. If you have a return upstairs, try running the fan in the “on” position all the time to keep the air circulating. I suggest you contact a professional HVAC contractor to check out your heating system, to measure heat output in each room, and to develop a plan for more even heating throughout your house.
