• Water pressure regulator adjustments

    Jun.15.2010

I had a plumber come to my house to replace the hot water tank PRV (pressure release valve). He told me that my pressure was too high (100 psi) and that I needed to replace the water pressure regulator. I did not have him replace it, but do I have any other options? From what I have read on the internet, most regulators can be adjusted. Is this true? It appears to have some type of bolt or nut at the top of the "bell".

Yes, it is true that most regulators can be adjusted to improve water pressure and the flow of water. You can adjust your water pressure regulator by turning the lock nut at the top of the bell and screwing the adjustment down a few turns. If you do this yourself, you will see whether or not the nut has already been adjusted down to the max. (The plumber should have checked this before recommending a new regulator.) In order to check this on your own, you will need to buy a pressure gauge. The type of pressure gauge that screws onto your hose bib faucet will make it easy to check the pressure. If the nut has been adjusted to the max or if you are not comfortable trying to adjust your water pressure regulator yourself, I suggest you contact a professional plumbing contractor, such as the Rescue Rooter Atlanta branch at (770) 427-6446, to assist you in assessing your problem.
