• We just moved into an older house and our toilets and tubs frequently back up.

We just moved into my grandparents older house (built in 1961). At least 3 times a week one of the toilets backs up and we notice the tub and shower back up too. We have to go to the front yard and open a round pressurized drain and plunge it 15-45 minutes and put a high pressure nozzle on the hose and put it as far as we can and keep plunging until it finally goes through! Years ago there was a tree in the front yard but it was removed about 10 years ago, we don't know what to do and everywhere we've called wants a lot of $$$. Help please, can we do anything ourselves?

The problem you described is not abnormal, especially in an older home. Unfortunately it sounds like a root intrusion somewhere in your sewer lines and it needs be handled by a professional. The good news is that technology has advanced greatly over the years, and plumbers now have a sewer video inspection device that can be used to pinpoint your exact problem before you have to start any costly digging repairs. Even better news is that the Rescue Rooter in your area offers this video inspection service free of charge. With a sewer video inspection, your plumber will snake a small flexible video camera through your cleanout access point and into your sewer line (fill-sized cleanout access required). The video can record what is inside your sewer system, allowing you to see exactly where the obstruction is. Your plumber will be able to review the video results with you and determine the best next steps. Depending on the results, you may be able to solve the problem with an auger or high-pressure flush, such as Rescue Rooter’s Scourjet®. If more extensive repairs are necessary your plumber will be able to discuss these options with you as well. If you would like to call a Rescue Rooter technician to perform this free video sewer inspection, you can reach us at (800) 869-6915.
