I was recently in the UK and every shower was an electrical shower -- meaning there was a switch to turn the system on and then an in-shower push button system to turn the water on. I was wondering why you do not see these more in the US and what pros and cons there are for these types of systems. Thank you.
An “electric shower” uses what is called a point of use water heater. A point of use water heater is a compact, tankless style water heater that provides instant hot water to individual fixtures. They are usually installed for use at a sink or a shower. These are not popular for showers in the US because they are typically not large enough to produce the GPM (gallon per minute) demand needed to run a shower. We do however use the same technology in the states, developed to accommodate your entire home. Whole house tankless water heater systems have become popular here. These tankless hot water systems are more expensive than the standard tank type water heaters, but are more efficient and can offset the upfront cost over time.
