• What do I do if I have roots in my sewer drain?

The plumber tells me that there are roots in my sewer drain.  What is the cost to remove the roots?  Can the roots be prevented from returning?

Roots that are obstructing or damaging your sewer line should not be ignored. While there are some “root killer” products available, I do not recommend you use these. Rather you need to have the problem identified and repaired in order to avoid any further damage. With today’s technology, plumbers can use what we call a video sewer inspection to diagnose the cause of a sewer line blockage. During this procedure a tiny fiber optic video camera is snaked through your cleanout access and into your sewer line, recording what is in your pipes. You and your plumber can review the video results and determine the best way to correct the problem. The great part about this procedure is that it finds out exactly where your blockage is without expensive and destructive excavation of your pipes. The video results can also tell you if an auger or high-pressure flush, such as Rescue Rooter’s Scourjet® service can solve the problem, or if more extensive repairs are necessary. Depending on what type of pipes you have, you may consider replacing them with PVC pipes which are stronger. In terms of a price, I recommend calling a local professional plumbing company, like ARS/Rescue Rooter, to perform a video sewer inspection. With the results, you will be able to discuss repair options and price with your plumber. If you would like to call the rescue Rooter in your area, their phone number is (510)869-6915.
