• What kind of thermostat should I buy?

    Oct.12.2010

We have an old home with electric baseboard heaters and an AC thermostat that controls ONLY the air conditioning which needs replacing. We can only find heat/AC thermostats at stores. Is this what I will need to replace my old round AC thermostat? If so, what do I need to do?

Since most systems today come with both heat and cooling, you may have a difficult time finding a thermostat that is for one or the other only. You can still use a heating and cooling thermostat but you need to know what type of air handler you have in place or buy one that works for both electrical and gas heating systems. Then, of course, comes the hard part - installing it. You have to be very careful not to cross the wires because crossing the wrong ones could potentially cause a short and create major repairs for you, up to and including shorting out the circuit board or transformer. Also, a lot of manufacturers try and use the same color scheme for wiring but that is not always the case. In fact, it is very possible to have totally different colored wires. I would recommend having a trained professional, such as the ARS/Rescue Rooter branch in Indianapolis at (317) 390-5555, come to your home and provide you with the best thermostat for your application and install it for you. Possibly you may be able to use one of the new digital programmable thermostats which will improve the efficiency and convenience of your system.
