• What would cause my gas furnace to shut off?

    Dec.18.2008

What would cause my furnace to shut off? My heat is not blowing out and when I turn the furnace off/on again, it sounds as though it is trying to ignite but then it will shut off again. No heat is being forced through the vents. I have Gas system.

Most gas systems follow a standard sequence of events in order to safely operate. If any step in this sequence is not met, the furnace will not be able to ignite and operate. Most systems will attempt to ignite 3 to 5 times before going in to a safety lock-out mode that will cause the blower to run continuously until you turn off power to the furnace. This safety feature is used to indicate to the home owner that there is a problem with the system.
Since gas furnaces vary by manufacturer, it is difficult to diagnose the exact problem without thoroughly inspecting your furnace. I would highly recommend you have a qualified HVAC technician inspect your gas furnace and recommend necessary repairs. When it comes to any natural gas product, proper repairs are necessary to ensure your safety and your family’s safety. ARS/Rescue Rooter of Indianapolis offers a free service call with a repair, and also a furnace tune-up with a no break down guarantee. If you would like to give them a try, their phone number is 317-390-5555.
