• When AC unit freezes, does it damage unit?

    Nov.28.2011

We have a new air conditioning unit. We had many problems with our unit freezing and I mean an inch of ice at first. A switch was moved and that solved the problem. But every day in the afternoon, the unit seems to be unable to maintain the temperature. It is always 3 to 4 degrees higher then we have it set. I checked, and we don't have safety switch. The system only cooled again when the temperature dropped at night. Could the 2 to 3 weeks of freezing have damaged the unit?

There are several reasons why a unit can freeze up, but the one that can be the simplest to check for and fix is a dirty filter. Check the filter to ensure you are getting enough airflow so your unit won’t freeze. If you have a clean filter then I suggest calling a repairman to come and investigate other possible causes. Fall is an excellent time to perform system maintenance on both your heating and cooling units to assure optimum efficiency and few if any surprise issues during the peak seasons. I suggest you contact a professional HVAC contractor, like ARS/Rescue Rooter, to find out more about seasonal cooling and heating tune-ups and system check-ups.
