This just started recently. While my AC/heat pump is running in the ac mode during summer, the furnace flames will kick on for some reason and sounds as if it is cycling the reverse valve. The compressor will stay on but the outside condenser fan will turn off so it sounds like a refrigerator similar to what happens in winter to defrost the condenser. Then after a minute or so the furnace flames will kick off and the outside fan will start again. The compressor stays on through this whole process. I have removed the filter as it was dirty to help with the airflow. Is there a mechanism that allows the furnace to kick on if the evaporator in the air handler is icing up? Or could the pressure be low causing the reverse valve to alternate. The dual mercury thermostat seems to be ok. The furnace is I believe a Jentrol (name plate is missing) made by the Goodman and is a ninety plus model. Any thoughts on what this could be?
If you have a Hybrid HVAC system the outdoor sensor might be faulty. If there is a malfunction in the outdoor sensor and it “thinks” the outdoor temperature is below the set point the system will switch on the gas furnace. The other possible issue here might be that the defrost board is causing the system to switch to the defrost mode. It is hard to pinpoint what the actual problem is without inspecting the unit in person. But both of the issues described above are electrical, so I recommend having a trained HVAC technician visit your home to check your system for proper operation.
