• Why does my mobile home have 2 thermostats?

    Oct.10.2009

I purchased a mobile home that has 2 thermostats, one with switches Heat Off Air, and one without switches. The home does have a central air conditioner, but I thought that the single thermostat without switches wasn’t necessary. I removed it and fixed the hole in the wall but now the furnace will not turn on. How can I fix this problem?

Your question has two possible answers. First, the thermostat you removed may have been a “smart stat” and necessary for proper operation of your systems. Smart stats, designed for energy efficiency, are preset to a temperature and cannot be changed. If you had an active smart stat, you possibly shorted out something while removing it. A second possible answer is that your mobile home has two thermostats because the central air conditioner unit and the heater have a transformer. Transformers control voltage. Using the two thermostats keeps the low voltage from bumping each other. You can use one thermostat but it has to have an independent sub base (which allows system and fan switching) and the low voltage wires would have to be relocated. Or, you can reinstall the old thermostat and go back to where you were. I would contact a HVAC contractor like ARS/Rescue Rooter to perform a complete heat check, including all safety devices.
