My furnace was replaced about five years ago. Just at the end of last winter it began to shut off during the night. It only came back on when I turned it off and then back on again. It would work during the day for a few hours, then it would shut off again during the night. I replaced the thermostat twice, but it still gave me trouble last year. My late husband had the furnace installed, so I have no idea who installed it. Any ideas what is wrong with it?
Since your furnace is five years old, it sounds like the flame sensor needs to be cleaned. Flame sensors indicate that a flame is present and are part of the furnace’s safety circuit design. The flame sensor should be cleaned once a year and, at the same time, you should have a complete safety check. Since temperatures are cooler at night and the furnace will cycle on more than it does during the day, the problem is possibly more noticeable at night. I suggest you contact a professional HVAC contractor, such as ARS/Rescue Rooter and secure a Health & Safety Plan (HSP) inspection for your furnace.
