• pH level is too low

    Jan.15.2010

My plumber says that my PH is too low from the water conditioning system in my homem and that it will destroy my copper piping. He said I need a pH level above 6.5 to be safe. Is that true?

Your plumber is correct. When the pH of water is below 6.5 on the pH scale, there is too much acid in the water and it can cause “pitting” of the pipes. Internal pitting (corrosion) of copper pipes is relatively rare, but it can turn into a costly situation when it causes pitting and eventually pinhole leaks. Pinhole leaks can, of course, raise your water bill, but even more significant is the cost of locating and repairing the leaks when one leak may well follow another. These leaks also lead to growth of mold and mildew and can result in higher premiums or other issues with your homeowners insurance. A normal pH reading is 7.0, and above 6.5 is acceptable. Your water conditioning system can perhaps be adjusted so that it achieves higher pH levels.
